Plum Blossoms Again

Outside the dining room window
I see plum blossoms again.
The tree is misshapen
from ancient bad prunings.
Because it no longer puts out fruit
I keep suggesting that we cut it down,
replace it with an apple tree.
But my wife says no.
The birds like it, she says.

I just heard of the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi–acceptance of the beauty of imperfect, impermanent things. Maybe the plum tree is wabi-sabi, and the birds know it!
